Thursday Trick: A shoe rack for everything else but shoes
I can’t be the only person who doesn’t like to use “over-the-door shoe organizers” for shoes! While shoe racks like the one to the left from Target may be great for organizing flats or sandals (even though they tend to get squished), I personally don’t think it’s aesthetically pleasing to see all my (potentially dirty and smelly) shoes staring me straight in the face and five feet tall.
The term “life hack” has become popular as of late. You know, they are the pictures you see on Facebook or Pinterest that make you slap yourself on the forehead and say, “Duh! Why didn’t I think of that?!” Well, I came across the following life hack and did exactly that. If you have a laundry room, pantry, or storage closet, using the over-the-door shoe organizer to organize your cleaning supplies is genius!
What a great way to store your 409, Windex, Comet, Lysol and Clorox wipes! They are clean, separated, visible, and easily accessible. Since shoe organizers typically come in plastic fabric, it is able to stretch to fit odd shaped bottles. It’s also a great way to keep potentially toxic cleaning products away from small children.
The shoe organizer isn’t limited to cleaning supplies, either! Here are some other ideas:
- Store your kids arts and crafts supplies
- If you are a knitter, keep your rolls of yarn tidy
- Reusable water/drink bottles
- Separate pantry items, like soup packets and pasta jars
Extra tip! I would even suggest taking it up a notch by labeling each pocket. It’s a great way to teach your children (or even other adults in your home) to put things back where they belong after you’re done using them.
Obviously, this over the door organizer only works if you actually have a door. This may be difficult for someone like me who lives in an apartment with no laundry room or hallway closet. What do you do in this case? I suggest running over to your nearest Ross, Marshall’s, Kohl’s, or TJ Maxx where I found these smaller “over the cabinet” organizers. I bought mine at Ross for only $6.99 each!
Here is a similar one on amazon. It’s a great way to keep your most used cleaning supplies close to you. They are a great size, fitting your typical rectangular bottles as well as round ones. I even have extra space behind for some sponges or gloves. Every time something spills on my kitchen counter, all I have to do is open the cabinet under the sink and voilà!
P.S. You won’t have to worry about keeping cleaning products far away from your children if they’re non-toxic like my favorite ones from The Honest Company!
